The samples of the pathogen were found after testing 20 samples from Manipur in a laboratory in Hyderabad, out of which 18 samples were positive for the new covid variant.
Mizoram also reported four cases of the highly infectious variant, also known as B.1.617.2. The pathogen samples were sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, UK also recorded a surge of 11,007 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, as the Delta variant emerges.
The new Delta variant of Coronavirus or B.1.617.2 strain, is worrying and is declared as a “variant of concern” by the WHO.
Headache, runny nose and sore throat are most common symptoms of this variant.
According to Prof. Tim Spector, the lead researcher of Zoe Covid Symptom study, people who have contracted the Delta Variant experience symptoms that feel “more like a bad cold.”
“People might think they’ve just got some sort of seasonal cold and they still go out to parties and they might spread it around to six other people,” he added.
“The whole situation is so dynamic because of the variants that are now circulating and… the Delta variant is well on its way to becoming the dominant variant globally because of its significantly increased transmissibility,” M. S. Swaminathan, an Indian geneticist, said at a press briefing in Geneva yesterday.
