The World Happiness Report 2021 has been released by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Finland once again was crowed as the World’s happiest country.

In which India ranked at 139th spot out of 149 by the World Happiness Report 2021 released by the United Nations. Previously India ranked 140th in 2019 and 144th in 2020.

What is World Happiness Report?

The World Happiness Report is a publication of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. It contains articles and rankings of national happiness, based on respondent ratings of their own lives, which the report also correlates with various (quality of) life factors.

However, this year the World Happiness Report 2021 focuses on the effects of COVID-19 and how people all over the world have fared.

The annual report rank nations were based on gross domestic product per person, healthy life expectancy, and the opinions of the citizens. The survey asks the respondents to rate at a scale of 1-10 how much social support they feel they have if something goes wrong, how much freedom they have to make their own life choices, their sense of how much corrupted their society is, and how generous they are.

“Our aim was two-fold, first to focus on the effects of COVID-19 on the structure and quality of people’s lives, and second to describe and evaluate how governments all over the world have dealt with the pandemic. In particular, we try to explain why some countries have done so much better than others.” the official website says.

“There have been both in-person and telephone samples for India, with the in-person responses being lower than telephone responses, while significantly higher than in-person responses in 2019. Hence the reversal in 2020 of the longer-term slide in Indian life evaluations was not attributable to mode effects,” it added.

Finland ranked as the happiest country in the World for four consecutive years. Followed by Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, and Norway.

Pakistan is ranked on 105th, Bangladesh on 101st and China on 84th, according to the report of UN.

Despite being one of the richest country in the world, United States ranked 19th in the list of happiness.

People residing in Afghanistan are the most unhappy with their lives, following them are people from Zimbabwe (148), Rwanda (147), Botswana (146), and Lesotho (145).

The report issued by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network ranks 149 countries based on “how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be”. The results of the report are based on the Gallup World Poll, have been correlated with factors like GDP and social security.

However, the index showed little change in the happiness level compared to last year’s report, which based on the information before covid-19.
