The news of the Zomato delivery man assaulting an Instagram Influencer has created a storm throughout the internet since yesterday. A lot of people have shared the video that was put up by Hitesha Chandranee on Instagram and Twitter, explaining her ordeal.
On 10th March Hitesha Chandranee had put up a video on Instagram and Twitter saying that a Zomato delivery man punched her nose, thus breaking it. In the video, she explained the incident that took place when she was complaining to the customer care service regarding the delay of the order. She also said that when the delivery man arrived with the food, he was rude and eventually punched her nose.
In the video, she also mentioned that she asked the man to wait until she speaks with the customer care executive and come to a conclusion about the compensation for the delayed order.
However, a day later, a media reporter who claimed he had spoken to the delivery executive said that according to the delivery man, Hitesha Chandranee hurt her nose with her own nose ring. He in fact told the media that she had also hit him with her slippers.
In an interview, the delivery man named Kamaraj, who has been suspended by Zomato after being accused by the woman who accused that after he reached her apartment door, handed her the food and was expecting her to pay as she chose cash on delivery as a payment option. He even apologized to her for the delay in the delivery due to heavy traffic and bad roads. But she was rude from the outset, asking for the reason for his delay to which he replied apologetically that there was a roadblock due to ongoing civic work and there were traffic jams as well. But she keeps on insisting that the order must be delivered in 45-50 minutes. He also said that he had worked for more than two years but this was his first time facing such an ordeal.
He added that the woman refused to pay after accepting the order and said that she is talking to zomato chat support.
The delivery executive claimed to have pleaded to her for paying the bill but the woman called him a “slave”. After that, the Zomato support team told the man that the order is canceled, but the woman refuses to give the food.
He also added that when he was walking toward the lift, she started using expletives in Hindi. She suddenly threw a slipper at him and started to hit him. For safety, he used his hand to shield from her blows. When she was trying to put his hand away she accidentally hit her nose with the finger ring she was wearing. Which led her to bleed. “Anybody who sees her face will understand that this wouldn’t be created by a punch. And I don’t wear any rings.” Kamaraj said.
Kamaraj added, “the Zomato support system person in Delhi also supported me and offered me empathy after I narrated the ordeal that I had to go through. The problem is there is no CCTV footage to prove my innocence.”
In a moment the people on Twitter came buzzing out who is the actual victim in the incident. People shared both sides of the story with “men too” posts. Moreover, some people also accused Hitesha of playing the victim card and the Zomato for not trusting their employees.
The co-founder of the food delivery app has said that the company is providing “all possible support” to both the alleged victim and the delivery partner to ensure that “both sides of the story come to light”.
“We are in constant touch with Hitesha, covering her medical expenses, and helping her with the proceeding,” Zomato CEO and co-founder Deepinder Goyal said in a statement. “We are also in touch with Kamaraj (the delivery executive), extending all possible support to make sure both sides of the story come to light and that due process is followed in the spirit of fairness.”
Addressing the incident, Goyal said that while Kamaraj’s services had been temporarily suspended, Zomato is “covering his earnings in the interim while there is an active police investigation”.
